An exciting new information system, SchoolZone, is ready to launch in November at Donnan School. SchoolZone provides parents and students with secure access to school and student information and is designed to enhance the re-lationship between school and home. SchoolZone users will find homework information, attendance records, news of school and district events, achievement results, timeta-bles, course history and access to selected online educa-tional resources. Using portal technology and the conven-ience of the Internet, it is available any time and any place.

As of November 12th, teachers at our school will begin to use SchoolZone as an information sharing and communication tool. Many families have already registered and will soon be receiving their unique UserID and password. Families who have not yet registered should contact the office for the registration form and return it to the school as soon as possible. We will provide more information about SchoolZone and its features in upcoming newsletters or here on the website.

Terry Fox Run 2008

Students at Donnan School have been asked to continue their success of fundraising for the Terry Fox Foundation, in support of cancer research.  Students may make a donation to this cause on behalf of their House team.  The House team with the largest donation will have the opportunity to have a group picture taken with the firefighters from Hall 6.  Donnan School will be participating in the annual Terry Fox Run/Walk on Friday, September, 26.  All cheques must be made out to “The Terry Fox Run”.   We are hoping to exceed our donation of $1200 from last year.

Thank you for your support,

Donnan Staff

About Terry Fox

Terry Fox was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and raised in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, a community near Vancouver on Canada's west coast.

An active teenager involved in many sports, Terry was only 18 years old when he was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer) and forced to have his right leg amputated 15 centimetres (six inches) above the knee in 1977.

While in hospital, Terry was so overcome by the suffering of other cancer patients, many of them young children, that he decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research.

He would call his journey the Marathon of Hope.

After 18 months and running over 5,000 kilometres (3,107 miles) to prepare, Terry started his run in St. John’s, Newfoundland on April 12, 1980 with little fanfare. Although it was difficult to garner attention in the beginning, enthusiasm soon grew, and the money collected along his route began to mount. He ran 42 kilometres (26 miles) a day through Canada's Atlantic provinces, Quebec and Ontario.

It was a journey that Canadians never forgot.

However, on September 1st, after 143 days and 5,373 kilometres (3,339 miles), Terry was forced to stop running outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario because cancer had appeared in his lungs. An entire nation was stunned and saddened. Terry passed away on June 28, 1981 at age 22.

The heroic Canadian was gone, but his legacy was just beginning.

To date, more than $400 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry's name through the annual Terry Fox Run, held across Canada and around the world.

We raised over $4,000.00 for the Terry Fox Run!

Thanks to all the students and parents!

 19 years of READ IN!

Thank you to all the volunteers who took the time to read to our students!

READ-IN is a city-wide promotion involving people of all ages from all walks of life in championing literacy development. This week long activity, which will take place October 6-10, 2008, focuses on reading and writing as essential ingredients to enrich life. Readings, talks, activities, and events held during the week all emphasize the importance of reading and learning and their lifelong impact.

With this thought in mind, the staff and students of Donnan School invite you to share our commitment to reading by helping us celebrate literacy.

Theme: Kaleidoscope of literacy.

“Kaleidoscope of literacy”, through shared experiences, literacy creates a kaleidoscope of new, magical, and extraordinary images of our world.

This year's theme, Kaleidoscope of literacy offers schools endless opportunities to be creative! To celebrate the evolution of literacy we can engage in reading print and include music, pictures, videos, online reading, television and the Internet. READ IN activities can be simple or complex. They can include many participants or few! It's all about sharing the joy of literacy!

Donnan School, will be hosting READ – IN activities from October 6 to 10.

Parents and members of our community are invited to drop in and to participate by reading to others.

The Sports Rec Program:

Sport Rec offers the chance to learn about the values of long term athletic development early in life, and is an amazing incentive for getting out of bed in a hurry in the morning! Sport Rec is an opportunity for student-athletes to work on core subjects in the morning and to explore a variety of sports and activities in the afternoon. Focusing on health and wellness, and never wandering too far from fun, these activities include traditional sports such as soccer, tennis, and basketball, along with rock-climbing, canoeing, and archery.
